Hearing health issues and hearing loss affect men and women differently. August is Tradies National Health Month so we thought we’d share five tips men should know about their hearing health.
- Hearing impairments are more common in men than in women.
- Hearing loss can increase the risk for depression in adults, especially those ages 18 to 69.
- Use of pain relievers, aspirin, NSAIDs or acetaminophen can increase the risk of hearing loss for men. See the study here and why younger men are at a greater risk than older men due to pain relievers and other medications.
- According to the Better Hearing Institute, unaddressed hearing loss can result in decreased earnings. The study showed people with untreated hearing loss lose as much as $30,000 in annual income, depending on the degree of hearing loss, and that those who use hearing aids, reduced the risk of income loss by 90 to 100 percent for mild hearing loss and 65 to 77 percent with severe to moderate hearing loss. - Diabetes makes it twice as likely that you’ll develop hearing loss.
These are only some of the things men should be aware of where hearing health is concerned. Take care of your hearing, practice safe listening methods and get annual hearing tests.
